WHAT IS NON VERBAL COMMUNICATION?

Non verbal communication involves those non verbal verbal stimuli in a communication setting, that generated by both, the source and his/her use, that have a potential message value for the source or receiver.
Non verbal communication is sending and receiving messages in a long variety of ways without the use of words.
Non verbal communication can be intentional or unintentional and most of the children and teachers are not conscious of this.


THE IMPORTANCE OF NON VERBAL COMMUNICATION

Non verbal language is one of the key aspects of communication, it has many functions:

1- Used to repeat a verbal message (pointing directions…)
2- Accents a verbal message (gives different meanings to a word: stop! Stop?)
3- Complements a verbal message (YES-sorriso.png) or contradict (I don´t know- wink.gif)
4- Regulates interactions (to let someone speak or not to speak)
5- Used to note proverbs influences (“Actions speak louder than words”)

STUDIES OF NON VERBAL LANGUAGE

-PROXEMICS: Study the way people construct and manage distance between themselves and the others in daily life. (School- microspace)
We get close or away from people depending on the confidence we have with them. Proxemics gives us the clues to interpret our feelings towards the others.

-KINETICS: Body activity as related to human communication (movement).

-SEMIOTICS: This science wants to understand how natural or constructed sings and symbols work as a communication medium.
We can differentiate signs:

- Units of non verbal communication.
- Gestures.
- Movements.
- Face expressions.
- Any movement that convey information.

From cues:

Non verbal signs used to prompt an event, behavior or experience.

-Repetition: they can repeat the message the person is making verbally.

-Contradiction: they can contradict a message the individual is trying to convey.

-Substitution: they can substitute for a verbal message. E.g: a pupil's eyes can often convey a more vivid message than words and often do.

-Complementing: they may add to or complement a verbal message. A teacher who pats a pupil on the back in addition to giving praise can increase the impact of the message.

-Accenting: they may accent or underline a verbal message. E.g: Pounding the table...

Or signal:

Non verbal used to inform as to what will happen, a hint or warning.


THE MOST COMMON NON VERBAL SIGNS:

-Emblems: gestures with precise meaning known by a culture, they are movements which have a direct verbal translation.

-Illustrators: gestures that enhance verbal messages, non verbal cues directly linked with words, they allow us to accent or emphasize words or ideas. They are also used to help us to describe something.

-Adaptators: help us to adapt release tension: hands are used very often (scratch, touch, smood…) also called manipulators. They help to adapt environment, E.g: adjust your glasses, yawn…

-Regulators: used to regulate, manage or control a conversation (turn taking, control a conversation…) they are non verbal cues which regulate interaction. People use eye behavior, inflection and head nodding to regulate the conversation.

-Affect displayers: (micro- expressions), they are facial expressions showing emotions due to influence the others (if one child displays sadness it helps him to attract teachers’ attention and ask what is wrong with him).
Affect displayers are not only expressions but also sounds associated to words that help us to create context and then we can predict a future response. This is known as paralanguage. The most common ones are:

-Qualifiers:volume, inflection, pitch, pacing, tone, melodiousness.

-Characterizers: sounds, sight, mumbling, groans, whines, yawning, laughing, crying (show character, emotions, and sensations).

-Characterizers: fillers in speech, pauses, silence or sounds: Oh! Ah- ah! Like- a, Shh, Uhuh! ...
